| Overview |
ChoiceMail is a spam blocking tool which will keep your inbox completely free from spam if used properly. Anyone who sends you email must be given permission for the email to get through to your inbox. Once they have been approved, users can send you emails and they will automatically get through to your email program. Email from senders who do not register and are not approved does not get through and is automatically deleted after four days.
Of course ChoiceMail offers a lot of control over senders you approve or reject. You can browse the ‘stopped’ email and explicitly allow either the sender or just that email if you want.
I have to admit to being a bit nervous at first that I might lose valid emails from people that I wanted to receive emails from. So, I watched the emails being stopped by ChoiceMail very carefully for the first month. There were a few emails that were stopped which I actually wanted to let through, but these were mailing lists that I subscribe to where the sender is unable to register themselves. Once I had set up a rule for the mailing lists in question the email was released to my inbox.

| Install / Uninstall / Download |
The download experience from DigiPortal is a good one. The trial version of ChoiceMail One is easy to find on the site. The download files themselves are hosted on FileKicker, so availability should be high.
Installation was simple and straightforward, as was the configuration. I have a number of email addresses which need to be protected from spam. Choicemail allowed me to easily configure each of these email addresses. Something that I particularly like about was the fact that it forced me to test the configuration and wouldn’t continue until testing was successful.
I haven’t uninstalled it yet, so I can’t comment on how complete the uninstall is and whether it leaves behind anything substantial. |

| User Interface |
ChoiceMail has an excellent user interface which is intuitive, friendly and functional. Multiple tabbed lists give the user access to their whitelist, blacklist, unknown senders and those senders who have registered and are waiting for your approval. Icons clearly show the type of each sender and whether the sender has been sent an automatic challenge email asking them to register.
You can choose the number of senders to view on each page to suit your personal requirements and allowing management of senders to be easier. A filtering option allows you to find a specific sender or group of senders. You can also view just the senders who have sent email in the last 24 hours.
The Spam-O-Meter at the bottom of the screen shows you the total number of emails received and the percentage of those emails that were spam.

| Functionaliy |
ChoiceMail can be installed on your personal computer along with your email program, or you could install it on a separate computer. You can set up multiple email addresses to be monitored by ChoiceMail, including web-based email addresses such as yahoo or hotmail.
When a sender emails you, ChoiceMail grabs the email first and determines whether the sender is on your whitelist (ie has already been approved by you). If the sender is on your whitelist then the email is automatically available to your email program. ChoiceMail exposes a POP3 service which you configure your email program to access. So your email program now actually receives valid email from ChoiceMail instead of directly from your email account on the Internet.
If a sender is not on your whitelist then ChoiceMail will send that person and email asking them to register. Until the sender has registered the email they sent is held under “Unknown Senders”. If the sender chooses to register then the email is moved to the “Awaiting Approval” tab in ChoiceMail ready for you to either approve or reject the sender.
At any stage you can import lists of senders who you want to pre-approve. These could be existing senders from your email program’s address book or elsewhere. ChoiceMail can also be configured to automatically add anyone that you send email to into your whitelist.
Rules can also be established that allow any email through which matches the conditions you set up in the rule. |

| Overall Impression |
I am highly impressed with ChoiceMail. It has cut the spam in my inbox to zero. I receive thousands of emails a week and I knew that a high percentage of those were spam. ChoiceMail tells me that 68% of all email that I receive is spam. Because ChoiceMail cuts that out, I have 68% less time wasted dealing with spam.
ChoiceMail is to be highly recommended. It is fully functional, robust and very affordable. The people at DigiPortal are a pleasure to deal with and overall my experience to date with ChoiceMail has been fantastic. |
